The past two weekends at Owl Central Games each featured a premiere event for one of the world’s largest card games! Whether you were more excited about the Modern $1k at the tail end of March, or the following weekend’s Duel Commander $1k, there was an awesome competitive event happening at Owl Central Games! Let’s jump into the action by covering the first of these two events; our Modern $1k!
Our Modern $1k featured 22 of the best Modern players in the area competing for our fully guaranteed $1k prize pool. Beyond the prize pool, this event was also the first chance to get some serious reps in ahead of the Modern RCQ Season that has just kicked off. After five rounds of Swiss and a 8th and 9th seed decided by less than 2% of their opponent’s match win percentage, we had our Top 8.
After our first round of single elimination action, we were left with our Top 4 who decided to lock in their prizes and split the rest of the prize pool.
This Top 4 included Alex Schmitt, local Modern regular and longtime fan of white-based go wide strategies, who stormed through the field, only dropping a single game on his way to a clean double-draw into the top cut with his well tuned Boros Energy deck. Alex’s path was the opposite of another Top 4 finalist, Josh Zearfoss, who snuck in on breakers to bring his 5-Color Creativity deck into the single elimination rounds.
Our Top 4 was rounded out by two other Owl Central Games regulars, each playing a deck they were familiar with. Ethan Wallace, on Jeskai Blink, and Noah Hippensteel, on Mono-Blue Belcher, both managed 3-1 records going into the final round of Swiss, allowing them to shake hands with their opponents and lock in a Top 8.

This past weekend Duel Commander returned to Owl Central Games in a big way! Our first ever Duel Commander $1k drew in players from both our local community, and those from neighboring cities like Harrisburg, York, Reading, and the suburban sprawl of Philly. By the time we kicked off the event, 20 players had signed up for the chance to take home a chunk of our prize pool.
Much like our Modern $1k a week earlier, out Top 8 played out the quarterfinals before our 4 finalists decided to lock in a split. We have three of the four players’ decklists below, which really serves to highlight what kind of impact Universes Beyond has had on singleton formats like Duel Commander.
